Description
Nose
The initial hit is undeniably Islay. Think pungent peat smoke, mingling with the salty spray of the sea and a farmyard earthiness. Lighter notes peek through as well, offering a surprising counterpoint. Hints of citrus, like lemon zest or pear drop candies, add a touch of sweetness. Subtle background notes of vanilla and even mint tea can be detected by keen noses.
Palate
The smokiness takes center stage here, but it’s a complex smoke, not a one-dimensional punch. Imagine biting into barbecued meats, especially brisket burnt ends, with a hint of sweet and tangy barbecue sauce clinging to them. Fruity notes emerge alongside the smoke, with crisp green apples leading the way. Despite the youth of the whisky, there’s a surprising sweetness present, like spun sugar. Don’t be fooled though, the peppery bite of the peat ash isn’t far behind, adding a pleasant warmth.
Finish
The Wee Beastie’s finish lingers long on the palate. The smokiness continues to develop, taking on a slightly meaty character. The lack of chill filtration becomes evident here, with a drying sensation that some find appealing. A subtle nuttiness, perhaps reminiscent of raw almonds, joins the barley malt essence, rounding out the experience.
