Knob Creek Quarter Oak

750ml, bottle

Knob Creek Quarter Oak takes the familiar profile of Knob Creek bourbon and elevates it with a unique aging process. This Kentucky straight bourbon undergoes a secondary maturation in much smaller, quarter-sized oak barrels. This increased contact with fresh oak wood intensifies the wood influence, creating a richer and more complex flavor profile compared to standard Knob Creek.

Initial Impression: The opening act is a familiar one for Knob Creek fans. Look for prominent notes of vanilla extract and caramel, hinting at sweet pastries and creamy desserts. These are joined by a welcoming wave of oak spice, a signature characteristic of Knob Creek. However, the quarter cask aging introduces a new twist. Hints of dark chocolate or cocoa powder might emerge, adding a touch of richness and complexity.

Deeper Sniffs: As you delve deeper, the influence of the smaller oak barrels becomes more apparent. Expect a more pronounced oak character, with hints of toasted wood shavings or even a touch of char. This adds depth and intrigue to the aroma. Depending on the specific batch, subtle baking spice notes like cinnamon or nutmeg might peek through, offering a warm and inviting counterpoint to the sweetness.

First Sip: The medium-bodied character offers a satisfying weight on the tongue without being heavy. The 100 proof (50% ABV) delivers a noticeable warmth that complements the bolder flavor profile. The familiar Knob Creek foundation of vanilla and caramel takes center stage, but with a noticeable increase in intensity. The oak influence is much more prominent compared to standard Knob Creek. Hints of charred oak and baking spices like cinnamon and nutmeg might dance on your palate, adding complexity and a touch of dryness.

Midpalate: As the whiskey opens up, the additional aging in quarter casks reveals its true potential. The richer oak character becomes more pronounced, offering hints of dark chocolate, dried fruit like raisin or prune, and even a touch of leather. These unexpected flavors add depth and intrigue to the overall experience.  For some enthusiasts, a hint of honey or brown sugar might emerge, offering a touch of sweetness that balances the oak influence.

Lingering Flavors: The sweetness fades gradually, leaving a lasting impression of the oak influence. Hints of charred oak, dark chocolate, and baking spices linger on the palate. The finish is drier compared to standard Knob Creek, reflecting the increased wood contact. However, it’s not astringent or harsh, but rather a satisfyingly dry conclusion to the flavor journey.
