Description
Penderyn Peated isn’t your typical peaty whisky. Hailing from Wales, this single malt takes a unique approach to achieve its smoky character. Instead of using peated malt barley during the initial mashing stage, Penderyn Peated gets its peaty influence through a clever maturation process. After spending time in ex-bourbon casks, the whisky undergoes a secondary maturation in casks previously used to mature peated Islay whiskies. This “finishing” process imbues the Penderyn Peated with a smoky layer without overwhelming its delicate spirit.
The result is a fascinating interplay of flavors. On the nose, you’ll be greeted with a wave of sweet, aromatic smoke, but underneath lies a surprising lightness. Hints of vanilla, tart green apple, and refreshing citrus peek through, offering a fruity counterpoint to the smokiness. The taste continues this intriguing dance. The gentle peat character mingles with notes of vanilla and those same green fruits, with a touch of savory earthiness adding complexity. The finish is where the smoke truly shines, lingering pleasantly alongside the fading sweetness of vanilla.
Unlike some heavily peated Scotch whiskies, Penderyn Peated is known for being approachable and well-balanced. Bottled at a cask strength of 46% ABV, it delivers a full-bodied experience without being overpowering. This unique Welsh whisky is a great choice for both peat enthusiasts and those curious to explore a lighter, more nuanced smoky dram.
