Description

Aroma

  • Primary: Oak and aged wood take center stage, offering a warm and inviting aroma. Interestingly, it leans towards bourbon-like characteristics with hints of vanilla, caramel, and perhaps even a touch of toasty coconut.
  • Secondary: Beneath the oaky influence, a range of spices emerges, potentially including cinnamon, nutmeg, and a touch of ginger. Hints of citrus peek through, reminiscent of lemon meringue pie with its sweet and tart complexity.

Palate

  • The initial taste presents a deep and robust maltiness. This isn’t a sweet dram, but the malt flavor is deep and satisfying.
  • The oak influence translates to the palate, providing a tannic structure that balances the richness. Hints of vanilla and caramel from the cask maturation weave through the experience, offering a touch of sweetness.
  • As the whisky develops on the tongue, the spices from the aroma come forward, adding a warming layer of complexity. The citrus notes become more subtle, offering a refreshing counterpoint to the richer elements.

Finish

  • The extended finish ensures that the diverse flavors persist on the palate. A subtle dryness from the oak tannin is balanced by the enduring presence of malt and spice notes. In the background, hints of vanilla and citrus may continue to linger.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Nose

The nose is old and classic. Oak and old wood lead the way. Curiously it actually smells quite a bit like old Bourbon with its wood plus caramel and vanilla. There's also warm toast, a range of spices, and decadent lemon meringue.

Palate

Palate

The palate is an exploration of malt. It is rich, but not sweet, and digs deep into that profile. There are elements of straw or hay. And in the backdrop, a gentle sprinkling of sweet baking spices.

Finish

Finish

The finish progresses into a smoothed out, more complex Bourbony finish: first a combination of nougat and nuts, while adopting an imminently chewy character. Next, it turns fruity sweet, like apricots with a dollop of vanilla cream. As the finish dies out, it takes on a slightly bitter, astringent, tannic feel, mostly oak-led, which beautifully contrasts the sweetness that had preceded.
