Torabhaig Allt Gleann Single Malt Scotch Whisky

750ml, bottle

Torabhaig Allt Gleann Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a bold and smoky expression for peat lovers. Crafted on the Isle of Harris, the newest distillery in the Hebrides, this single malt utilizes heavily-peated malt and maturation in first-fill bourbon and re-fill whisky casks. The result is a whisky bursting with smoke and maritime character, balanced by hints of vanilla and spice. Perfect for those who enjoy a peaty dram, Torabhaig Allt Gleann is a taste of the rugged beauty of the Isle of Harris.

Initial Impression: Prepare for a powerful opening act. The heavily-peated malt asserts its presence immediately, offering a wave of smoke that evokes bonfire embers and smoldering peat. Hints of medicinal character, like iodine or antiseptic, might also be present, adding a touch of complexity.  As the initial intensity subsides, maritime influences start to emerge. Look for hints of seaweed, brine, and even a touch of sea spray, reflecting the whisky’s coastal maturation.

Deeper Sniffs: As you delve deeper, the complexity of Torabhaig Allt Gleann unfolds. The influence of the first-fill bourbon casks starts to peek through, offering a subtle sweetness of vanilla bean and caramel.  This sweetness helps to balance the smokiness, creating a more harmonious aroma.  Hints of black peppercorn or rye spice might emerge, adding a touch of warmth and intrigue.  Depending on the specific batch, you might also detect a whisper of honey or floral notes, offering a surprising counterpoint to the smoke and spice.

First Sip: The medium-bodied character offers a satisfying weight on the tongue. The ABV, typically ranging from 46-48% depending on the batch, delivers a noticeable warmth that complements the flavors. The initial taste is a powerful explosion of smoke, mirroring the aroma. Hints of bonfire embers, charcoal, and perhaps even a touch of ash dance on the palate.  The maritime character follows through, offering a salty and savory counterpoint to the smoke.  Look for flavors of seaweed, brine, and a touch of iodine.

Midpalate: As the whiskey opens up, the subtle sweetness from the first-fill bourbon casks becomes more apparent.  The vanilla and caramel notes help to tame the smokiness, creating a more balanced and interesting flavor profile.  The black peppercorn or rye spice from the aroma translates to the palate, offering a pleasant tingle on the tongue.  Depending on the specific batch, a touch of honey or fruitiness might emerge, adding another layer of complexity.  The influence of the re-fill casks might also become noticeable with subtle hints of wood spice or tannin.

Lingering Flavors: The smokiness fades gradually, leaving a long and complex finish. Hints of bonfire embers and wood ash linger on the tongue, along with the subtle sweetness of vanilla and caramel. The maritime character whispers in the background, with a touch of salinity and brine. The black peppercorn spice might also linger, offering a warming farewell.

This distillery signature will be the foundation upon which we build our legacy, and we look forward to witnessing this style develop over our first four expressions to be released under the Legacy Series label, as we dig deeper into the complexity of the flavor of peat to deliver truly exceptional and balanced character.
