Updated August 2026.
Soju is not one ABV. Typical bottles run about 16–25% depending on the SKU. A 360 mL at 16% is about 3.2 US standard drinks; at 20% about 4.1; at 24% about 4.9. Korea’s “fresh” class has sat near 16.9%; some US bottles still read 20–24%. Read the label. Four drinks in about two hours is NIAAA’s binge pattern for women; five for men. Warning, not a bottle challenge.
A soju glass is often ~50 mL. Seven of those empty a 360 mL. At 16.9% each glass is about 0.48 drinks — closer to a light beer than to a 1.5-ounce whiskey. The 2023 page that said “five to seven shots, one bottle, drunk” treated a soju glass like an 80-proof shot. It is not.
Soju conversions (table by ABV)
Standard drinks = (fl oz × ABV) ÷ 0.6. 360 mL ≈ 12.17 fl oz. 375 mL ≈ 12.68 fl oz. 50 mL ≈ 1.69 fl oz.

Korea press in June 2026 said HiteJinro cut Chamisul Fresh to 15.7% for the domestic roll-out. The official export site this fetch still prints 16.0%. Virginia ABC this fetch prints 16.9% / 33.8 proof for both Fresh and Original. Retailers still advertise some Original bottles at 20.1%. Those are not the same SKU. The only honest instruction is the number on the glass in front of you.
Why one bottle is not “getting drunk”
SERP pages invent “drunk at one bottle / 4–6 shots.” That is a challenge. We will not copy it. A 360 mL of 16.9% soju is roughly three beers’ worth of ethanol, not a fifth of whiskey. See how many beers and shot math. Banchan and a slow pour are not the same as two bottles of fruit soju on an empty stomach.
Legal driving is 0.08% in most US states (0.05% in Utah). Commercial drivers in a CMV are 0.04% (FMCSA). Under-21 is zero-tolerance. High-intensity drinking — eight drinks for women, ten for men, on one occasion — is a worse-warning, not a dare. Distilled soju and some US products labeled soju can be 20–40%. If a Los Angeles bar lists “soju cocktails” at vodka strength, count them as vodka. See vodka shot math.
Soju is not whiskey with a smaller glass
Diluted green-bottle soju is distilled spirit cut with water and sweeteners. That is why 16–17% exists as a commercial target. It is closer to a strong wine than to a 40% shot. Shochu, baijiu, and US “soju” at 24–40% share a syllable, not a proof. Sharing rules (pour for others, two-handed receive) do not change grams. A 360 mL passed around a table of four is still ~3.4 drinks total at 16.9%, not 3.4 each. Fruit soju at 13% is less ethanol plus sugar. Ice in a soju-tini does not rebate alcohol.
If you are going to drink soju, read the ABV, eat food, water, and do not drive. Two fast 16.9% bottles are already past a 4- or 5-drink binge line. Population-average metabolism is about one standard drink per hour, not one soju glass per hour. For another lower-proof shot bottle, see Fireball.
