Yes. Twisted Tea Original contains caffeine because it is made with real brewed tea. Twisted Tea’s own product page calls Original a malt beverage with tea and natural flavors at 5% ABV. Caffeine is what you expect from Camellia sinensis leaves. It is not an energy-drink additive listed as “caffeine” on a supplement panel.
Boston Beer / Twisted Tea does not publish a milligram number on the public Original product page. Older roundups, including the 2022 version of this URL, repeat “about 30 mg per 12 ounces.” That figure is plausible for a diluted hard tea, but it is not a brand-verified 2026 spec. If you need a medical number, treat it as “some caffeine, less than a coffee,” and ask the company or read a lab panel — do not treat 30 mg as gospel.
One 12-ounce Original at 5% ABV is also one US standard drink. Caffeine does not cancel ethanol. It can mask tiredness.

FDA says 400 mg of caffeine a day is not generally associated with dangerous, negative effects for healthy adults. That is a food-additive guidance number, not a green light to stack Twisted Teas with coffee and energy drinks. Sensitive people, pregnant people, and anyone on stimulant or heart medications get a clinician’s answer, not a blog milligram.
Not every “Twisted” can is tea
The 2022 page said all Twisted Tea flavors have caffeine because all of them were tea. That is stale. In May 2026 Boston Beer announced a summer party pack that includes Twisted Lemonade with no tea — “just refreshing hard lemonade.” Rocket Pop and Original in that pack still use brewed tea. Read the can. If there is no tea, there is no tea-leaf caffeine.
Extreme flavors, Light, and fruit variants that still list brewed tea will still have caffeine. Half & Half is half tea and half lemonade, so the caffeine should be lower than Original, but Boston Beer has not published that split. Do not invent 15 mg.
Alcohol plus caffeine
Twisted Tea is a flavored malt beverage, not a distilled spirit. At 5% ABV a 12-ounce bottle or can is one standard drink; a 24-ounce can is two. Caffeine is a stimulant. Alcohol is a depressant. Together they can make you feel more alert than your BAC deserves. That is the same reason US regulators have spent years warning about caffeinated alcohol drinks. Twisted Tea’s caffeine dose is modest compared with a coffee, but the combination still hides how tired you are.

Ingredients that actually matter
- Real brewed tea (black tea leaves on Original).
- Malted barley / malt beverage base — this is the alcohol, beer-adjacent, not vodka.
- Sugar and natural flavors. Light is a lower-calorie SKU; check the label.
- 5% ABV on Original, year-round, per twistedtea.com.
Long Island Iced Tea is a different drink (several spirits, often no tea). Twisted Tea is tea plus malt alcohol. Do not confuse the two when you are counting caffeine or counting drinks.
Hard tea is still beer-class alcohol
In the US, Twisted Tea is a flavored malt beverage. It is sold like beer, taxed like beer in most states, and clocked like beer at the grocery cooler. Caffeine does not move it into an energy-drink legal category by itself. The 5% ABV is the number that matches a standard beer.
Light Twisted Tea, if the SKU in your state is still below 5%, is slightly less than one standard drink per 12 ounces — read the can. Extreme flavors that raise ABV raise the drink count. A 24-ounce can is two drinks at 5% before caffeine enters the chat.
