Updated March 2026.
Hard Mountain Dew does not have caffeine. The brand FAQ on hardmountaindew.com is blunt: “Hard Mountain Dew is free from all caffeine.” That is the alcoholic flavored malt beverage from Boston Beer — not the green soda in the Pepsi cooler.
The same official FAQ lists 5% ABV, 100 calories, 2.2 g total carbs, and no added sugar per 12-ounce serving, sweetened with acesulfame potassium and sucralose. It is brewed like beer, so it is not gluten-free. Regular Mountain Dew soda is a different drink: Pepsi’s US product facts list 54 mg of caffeine per 12 fl oz.
Hard Dew vs the soda
| Drink | What it is | ABV | Caffeine (12 oz) | Calories (12 oz) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hard MTN DEW (brand FAQ) | Flavored malt beverage, Boston Beer | 5% | 0 mg | 100 |
| Regular Mountain Dew soda (Pepsi product facts) | Soft drink | 0% | 54 mg | see the can |
One 12-ounce Hard Dew at 5% is one US standard drink (NIAAA: 12 oz of 5% beer = 14 g alcohol). A 24-ounce single-serve can, which the FAQ also sells, is two standard drinks if it is the same 5% liquid. Read the can.
What is actually on shelves
The 2026 brand FAQ lists flavors including Original, Baja Blast, Livewire, and Code Red, plus 12-pack variety options and 24-ounce singles. Availability is state-by-state. Older distributor copy mentioned watermelon; treat the can and hardmountaindew.com as the source, not a 2023 blog. Limited or taproom SKUs are not inventoried here.
Hard Dew is an FMB, not a distilled spirit and not the caffeine soda. It will not “keep forever” like 80-proof vodka. The brand says flavor generally holds about 12 months — a freshness window, not a USDA leftover. Store it like other malt beverages: cool, not a hot trunk. Why people ask
The soda is famous for caffeine. The hard version was built as a 5% malt drink that tastes like Dew without the stimulant. TTB does not ban caffeine in all malt beverages, but this SKU’s manufacturer says there is none. Do not assume every “hard soda” is caffeine-free — read that label too.
This is not an energy drink and not a hangover plan. Four 12-ounce cans in about two hours is NIAAA’s binge pattern for women; five is the male pattern. That is a health line, not a target. Do not drive. See how many beers to get drunk for the same 5% math.
