Updated April 2026.
There is no official best red-wine substitute for cooking. Red wine on a US table bottle is 27 CFR Part 4 wine — grape and class, not a 2026 ranking. Typical US table lots sit near 12% Residual cook ethanol unused as a number. Salted cooking wine is a different bottle. Stock, tomato, or a splash of the same grape you would drink all stay pantry talk. No leftover-alcohol clock.
