History & Distillery

Located in Grande Champagne’s premier cru, Frapin’s single-family estate has over 240 hectares of vines. The property, known as Chateau Fontpinot, is an 18th-century manor house. This house is the only house in the region that can be called Chateau.

They use the Ugni Blanc grape to make Frapin Cognacs. This variety has a low alcohol level and high acidity levels, which helps protect the wine until it is ready to be distilled. This wine is also known for its aromatic concentration.

How It’s Made

Frapin Cognac Distillation Process

Master distillers transform the wines into exceptional cognacs using lees, the dead yeast cells left over from fermentation. They control the distillation process, which takes place in six large copper stills.

During this process, the wine is heated by the boiler, which then causes the alcohol to rise through the swan neck and eventually condense. This process, known as brouillis, then produces an impure alcoholic liquid.

The brouillis is then turned into the bonne chauffe, a second distillation. This process takes place once more, and this time, it produces a colorless eau-de-vie. The master distiller takes the delicate flavors and aromatics of the bonne chauffe and makes a colorless eau-de-vie that is 71 degrees alcohol by volume.

Base Ingredients

The base ingredient of Frapin is the Ugni Blanc grapes used to make wines before transforming them into cognacs. The copper spot stills and Eaux-de-vie used to distill and age the spirit contributes to its flavor profile, aroma, and finish.
