Last Updated on October 25, 2023 by Lydia Martin
Twisted Tea has become more popular thanks to a viral video of a man smacked with a can straight to the face – now that’s surely strong.
But what alcohol is in Twisted Tea, and is it really strong enough to knock you down? No pun intended.
In this article, I’ll uncover the mystery behind the drink’s alcohol content and explore whether it lives up to its reputation as a force to be reckoned with.
About The Alcohol in Twisted Tea
Twisted Tea contains malt-base alcohol that you can find on malted beer, and it is made by the Boston Beer Company.
Twisted Tea is a refreshing hard iced tea, and I like chilling it before consumption. It is made from natural flavorings, cold-brewed black tea, and alcohol.
“Always do sober what you said you’d do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.” -Ernest Hemingway, Novelist
Most homemade twisted teas contain tea, flavorings, and vodka for stronger alcohol content.
2 Alcohols It Possibly Contains
1. Malt-Based Alcohol (Similar to Beer)
According to the Twisted Brewing Company’s official website, Twisted Tea uses malt-base alcohol, the same type of ethanol you can find in beer.
A can of original Twisted Tea contains 5% malt-based alcohol, similar to beer.
Malt beer is made from grains, and the alcoholic drink combines teas and flavorings to make hard iced tea.
2. Vodka
A homemade twisted tea usually contains vodka [1].
However, the launched Twisted Tea by the Boston Beer Company does not contain vodka. The ethanol in the alcoholic drink is from malted barley.
Twisted Tea (Full) Ingredients
Twisted Tea is made with natural flavorings, malt base from beer, and real brewed tea. The Original Hard Iced Tea is made from the natural lemon flavor, tea, and 5% malted beer.
It is as tasty as lemonade but has a slight twist that can never go wrong.
Aside from the original flavor, Twisted Tea comes in different styles. Half and half, raspberry, peach, mango, light, and tropical Twisted Teas use natural ingredients and real iced tea.
Aside from fruit-based styles like mango, blackberry, lemon, peach, and strawberry, the brand offers a Slightly Sweet Tea that is half the sugar of the original.
Do All Twisted Tea Styles Have Malt?
Yes, all Twisted Tea styles have malt, the same alcohol you can find in beer. Twisted teas are made from grain-like malted barley.
However, the Hard Iced Tea is brewed in natural flavors instead of hops.
Does Twisted Tea make you drunk? Well, yes! The alcohol content of Twisted Teas comes from the malt it uses.
After the fermentation of the alcohol [3], tea leaves are added then natural flavors are added to the malt beer base.
How Much Alcohol Is In Twisted Tea?
Twisted Teas are hard iced teas that have an alcohol content that ranges between 4% to 5%.
Twisted Tea Light “Twea Light” contains 4% ABV while Twisted Tea Half and Half and other styles contain 5% ABV.
Twisted Tea Light is slightly lower in alcohol content, and many are obsessed with the beverage because it tastes good and contains 109 calories per 12 oz serving.
How many Twisted Teas should you consume before you get drunk? The answer can depend on how your body reacts to the alcohol, but it can be around nine to ten cans on average.

Note-Worthy Facts
Twisted Tea is not gluten-free because it is made similarly to beer. Its main ingredients are made from malt, which is not gluten-free.
Moreover, the flavorings used in the beverage contain sugar, so if you are on a keto or low carb diet, we don’t recommend this.
It’s Not Caffeine-Free
Twisted Tea is not caffeine-free because tea has caffeine. Twisted Teas use real tea leaves, and it is slightly caffeinated.
12 oz cans of Twisted contain approximately 30 milligrams of caffeine which is ⅓-½ more than a cup of coffee [2].
It May Contain Allergens
Twisted Tea is committed to producing safe products, and the customer is always their priority.
Twisted Tea does not contain milk, egg, tree nuts, wheat, fish, peanuts, crustacean shellfish, and soy.
“Twisted Tea: A kick of flavor, a sip of surprise.”-Liquor Laboratory
However, if you have a certain sensitivity to gluten, avoid this drink since all Twisted Tea styles contain gluten.
