There is no safe or fixed amount of Baileys that “gets you drunk,” because body weight, sex, food, pace and tolerance all change how alcohol affects you. What we can give you is the alcohol content: Baileys Original Irish Cream is 17% ABV (34 proof) in the US, so a 1.5 ounce pour is about 0.43 US standard drinks and a 750 ml bottle holds about 7.2. For reference only, the NIAAA binge pattern of four standard drinks (women) or five (men) in about two hours equals roughly 14 to 18 ounces of Baileys. That is a line to stay under, not a goal, and no amount is compatible with driving.
Baileys tastes like a dessert, which is exactly why it is easy to underestimate. This guide shows the math, explains what is actually in the bottle, and compares Baileys with beer, wine and spirits so you can count accurately over the holidays.
What Baileys is, and why it counts as a liqueur
The Virginia ABC product listing describes Baileys Original as a blend of Irish dairy cream, spirits, aged Irish whiskey and chocolate, bottled at 17% ABV. Legally, it is a cordial or liqueur. Under 27 CFR § 5.150, a liqueur is a flavored distilled spirit containing at least 2.5% sugar by weight, which is why Baileys is shelved with liqueurs rather than with whiskey even though Irish whiskey is part of the recipe.
That 17% figure puts Baileys well below a straight spirit like 80 proof whiskey (40% ABV) but well above beer and most wine. If you are comparing cream liqueurs, see our breakdowns of Carolans Irish Cream vs Baileys and Kirkland vs Baileys, and browse the Liqueurs Guide for the wider category.
Baileys standard drink math
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) defines a US standard drink as 14 grams of pure alcohol, about 0.6 fluid ounces. The formula is:
Standard drinks = (fluid ounces x ABV) / 0.6
| Serving of Baileys Original (17%) | Alcohol (fl oz) | Standard drinks |
|---|---|---|
| 1 oz splash in coffee | 0.17 | 0.28 |
| 1.5 oz shot | 0.26 | 0.43 |
| 2 oz over ice | 0.34 | 0.57 |
| 3.5 oz (about 1 standard drink) | 0.60 | 0.99 |
| 375 ml bottle (12.7 oz) | 2.16 | 3.6 |
| 750 ml bottle (25.4 oz) | 4.31 | 7.2 |
In short, it takes roughly 3.5 ounces of Baileys to equal one 12 ounce beer at 5% or one 5 ounce glass of wine at 12%. A generous holiday pour of 3 to 4 ounces is about one full drink by itself.
How that compares with the binge drinking threshold
NIAAA defines binge drinking as a pattern that brings blood alcohol concentration to 0.08%, which typically happens after about four drinks for women or five for men in about two hours. Converted to Baileys Original:
- 4 standard drinks is about 14 ounces of Baileys, a bit more than half a 750 ml bottle.
- 5 standard drinks is about 17.6 ounces of Baileys, roughly two thirds of a bottle.
Those are averages, not predictions. Smaller bodies, an empty stomach and drinking quickly all raise blood alcohol faster, and women on average reach a higher concentration than men from the same amount. The cream and sugar in Baileys do not cancel out the alcohol.
Where Baileys alcohol hides
Most Baileys is not drunk as a shot. It goes into coffee, hot chocolate, milkshakes and layered shooters, and the other ingredients often add more alcohol:
- Coffee or cocoa with Baileys: 1.5 oz Baileys alone is 0.43 drinks.
- Layered shots that pair Baileys with coffee liqueur or whiskey carry the alcohol of every layer, so add each ingredient separately.
- Mudslide style drinks combine Baileys with vodka and coffee liqueur and can easily reach two standard drinks in one glass.
For comparison, a 1.5 ounce pour of 80 proof whiskey is a full standard drink; see how much whiskey it takes for the same math with a straight spirit.
Calories, shelf life and storage
Baileys lists Original Irish Cream at 314 kcal per 100 ml, which works out to roughly 140 calories in a 1.5 ounce pour. According to the brand’s US FAQ, Baileys lasts two years from the day of bottling, opened or unopened, and smaller bottles of 100 ml or less last 18 months. Baileys says refrigeration is not required, and recommends storing it between 32°F and 77°F away from direct sunlight. That shelf life is different from spirits like whiskey; our guide to whether bourbon goes bad explains the difference, and how long coffee liqueur lasts covers another holiday staple.
If you are drinking Baileys this season
- Count ounces, not mugs. A large mug can hide a double pour.
- Eat first and alternate with water or plain coffee.
- Set a limit before the party starts.
- Plan a ride home. Never drive after drinking.
FAQ
Is Baileys strong?
Baileys Original is 17% ABV, roughly a third of the strength of 80 proof whiskey but more than three times a typical 5% beer.
How many shots of Baileys equal one drink?
About 2.3 shots. Each 1.5 ounce shot is roughly 0.43 standard drinks.
Can Baileys get you drunk?
Yes. It contains real alcohol, and because it tastes sweet and creamy, people often drink more of it than they realize.
Does Baileys need to be refrigerated after opening?
No. Baileys says refrigeration is not required. Keep it between 32°F and 77°F and out of direct sunlight.
How long does an opened bottle of Baileys last?
Baileys says two years from the bottling date, whether or not the bottle has been opened.
