Captain Morgan Original Spiced is bottled at 35% ABV, or 70 proof. That single number explains most of what people find surprising about the brand, including the fact that it is not legally rum in the United States.
Under federal standards of identity, a product must reach 40% ABV to be labeled “rum.” Captain Morgan Original Spiced sits five points below that line, which classifies it as a distilled spirits specialty rather than rum. Look closely at the front label and you will find it describes itself in terms of Caribbean rum “with vanilla, spice and other natural flavors” rather than simply as rum.
This is not a knock on the product. It is a deliberate formulation choice aimed at approachability and mixability, and it has made Captain Morgan one of the best-selling spirits in the world. But it does mean the bottle is meaningfully weaker than most drinkers assume, and that matters when you build a drink with it.
What is actually in the bottle
The base spirit is molasses rum, column-distilled in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, aged up to a year in oak, then blended with a proprietary spice mix built principally on vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. In 2023 the recipe was reformulated to use real Madagascar vanilla rather than artificial vanilla flavoring — a genuine upgrade, and one worth noting if you last tried the brand years ago and wrote it off.
The result is medium-bodied and noticeably sweet, with vanilla and caramel forward and a soft, low-heat finish. That softness is a direct function of the 35% ABV.
The range
Original Spiced — 35% ABV (70 proof). The flagship, and the bottle nearly everyone means when they say “Captain Morgan.” Sweet, vanilla-driven, built for cola.
100 Proof Spiced — 50% ABV. The same flavor direction at substantially more strength. This is the bottle to buy if you have found Original disappearing into your mixers. It also makes a genuinely better rum and Coke, because the spice survives dilution.
Private Stock — 40% ABV. A darker, richer, more heavily spiced expression that clears the legal rum threshold. Closer to a sipping proposition than anything else in the range, though still sweet.
Black Spiced. Darker and more molasses-forward, positioned against Kraken.
White Rum — 40% ABV. An unspiced white rum, which many people do not know Captain Morgan makes. It clears the threshold and is a legitimate mixing rum.
The flavored line. Pineapple, coconut, apple and similar expressions, generally bottled lower still. These rotate more often than the core range, so check the label for current ABV.

The pattern is clear once you line them up: Captain Morgan is the mildest and sweetest of the mainstream spiced rums. Whether that is a strength depends entirely on what you want.
If you are making a rum and Coke for someone who does not much like the taste of spirits, Captain Morgan is arguably the correct answer and has been for decades. If you want the rum to assert itself against a mixer, every other bottle in that table does it better — and Captain Morgan’s own 100 Proof expression does it best while keeping the house flavor.
How to drink it
Captain and Coke. The drink the brand was built on. Two ounces to four or five ounces of cola, over plenty of ice, with a lime wedge that matters more than people think — the acid cuts sweetness the rum and the cola are both contributing.
Spiced rum and ginger beer. Better than the cola version, in my view. Ginger’s bite is the natural counterweight to this bottle’s sugar.
Spiced rum punch. Where the lower proof becomes an advantage. In a large-format punch with citrus and fruit juice, 35% ABV gives you something people can drink over an afternoon.
Hot buttered rum, or a spiced rum toddy. Warmth amplifies the vanilla and cinnamon. This is the best use of Original Spiced outside of a highball.
