Captain Morgan Rum Bottle Prices, Types, Sizes & Buying Guide
Last Updated on August 22, 2023 by Lydia Martin
Captain Morgan is the second most-sold brand of spirits in the USA and is one of the most recognized symbols in the world liquor industry. This Puerto Rican spiced rum brand produces the famous Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum.
A blend of Caribbean spices is infused in the flavoring process of the Captain Morgan Rum to stay faithful to its Jamaican roots. Let’s find out how they’re priced.
Captain Morgan Rum – An Introduction
One of the Queen’s pirates from the 17th century, Sir Henry Morgan, raided Spanish settlements in the Caribbean and was so exceptional at what he did that he became Governor of Jamaica.
However, Henry Morgan has no connection to the Captain Morgan Rum Company you’re familiar with today.
The Captain Morgan you see in every bottle is a mascot, owing to his fame to artist Don Maitz. In 1944, the Seagram Company bought the Long Pond distillery from the Jamaican government.
Samuel Bronfman bought the rights to the unique Jamaican rum and named it Captain Morgan to commemorate the pirate. In 2001, Seagram sold the brand to Diageo.
Compared to Other Rum Brands
Just like with other rums, this smooth and medium-bodied rum is made from distilled sugar cane molasses. The rum is aged in charred oak barrels — the reason for its rich dark color.
Famous rum brands all fall under the same price range and have almost the same alcohol content and proof. Factors such as aging and ingredients impact the price: brands that are aged longer and incorporate rare ingredients are more costly.
There isn’t much difference in bottle price between Malibu Coconut Rum and a bottle of Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum. Malibu has an impressive range of fruit-infused rums that are great for those who are beginning to experiment with liquor.
A spicier, darker alternative to Captain Morgan is the Kraken Black Spiced Rum, which sells at the same prices. Kraken makes black rum exclusively, so Captain Morgan Rum takes the cake when it comes to rum variety.
Sailor Jerry has perfected their exclusive Spiced Rum recipe that tastes great with a little bit of simple syrup. Each bottle is only a bit more expensive than the prices of Captain Morgan. More on Sailor Jerry and Captain Morgan here.
The standard Bacardi bottle sells cheaper than the Captain, but the Bacardi brand also has more premium labels at the same prices. More on the differences between Bacardi and Captain Morgan here.
Types of Captain Morgan Rum
This brand offers plenty of rum variants that have an ABV of 40 percent. It even boasts an extensive line of fruit-infused rum (35 percent ABV), which make for great mixers.
Black Rum
The Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum is rich and full, with strong vanilla notes. This black rum is matured in charred oak barrels. Botanicals like blackstrap molasses, rich clove spice, premium cassia bark, and other exotic spices contribute to this variant’s richness.
Spiced Gold
The Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum is a medium-bodied spiced rum. It is aged in oak barrels and has notes of brown sugar, caramel, and other secret spices. Cola and Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum is a favorite blend.
White Rum
Captain Morgan White Rum is clear and aged in ex-bourbon casks for a year. This distilled rum has sweet vanilla with a hint of citrus. Its mellow spice is the perfect base alcohol for citrus cocktails.
Private Stock
Although this isn’t aged as long as other brands, the Captain Morgan Private Stock Rum shouldn’t be underestimated. It’s aged for over two years and uses a secret blend of Caribbean rums compared to their original Spiced Gold. Plenty of people say this is the best for its price.
Parrot Bay
Captain Morgan’s Parrot Bay Coconut Rum tastes like a holiday getaway in a bottle — it’s sweet and refreshing with tropical fruit flavors. The Parrot Bay line has fruit-infused rums such as strawberry, passion fruit, mango, and several other fruits, which you can create poolside drinks with.

How to Drink It
Captain Morgan rums can be enjoyed straight to get the full taste of the rum. You can also enjoy it on the rocks if you prefer cold rum. Choose more premium labels like Captain Morgan Private Stock or the Black Spiced Rum for sipping.
You can also mix Captain Morgan’s light and dark rums. The Hurricane cocktail from New Orleans is a mixture of light and dark rums, passion fruit, orange and lime juice, and simple syrup. [1]
