Short answer: yes, for a specific job, and it is genuinely the best mainstream spiced rum for that job. It is also frequently bought for the wrong reasons, and it disappoints people who expected something it never claimed to be.

What Kraken actually is
Kraken Black Spiced Rum is bottled at 47% ABV — 94 proof. That makes it the strongest of the widely available spiced rums by a clear margin. Captain Morgan Original is 35%, Bacardi Spiced is 40%, Sailor Jerry is 46%.
The base is molasses rum distilled in Trinidad and Tobago, aged one to two years in oak, then blended with a proprietary spice mix built on cinnamon, clove, ginger, nutmeg and cardamom. The brand launched in 2010 and is owned by Proximo Spirits.
On the color, since the marketing does not say so plainly: it comes from caramel coloring, not from extended aging and not from squid ink. A one-to-two-year-old rum does not reach that shade naturally. The Victorian-style jug-handle bottle and the sea-monster mythology are excellent packaging, and the packaging is doing real work here. Judge the liquid separately.
What it tastes like
Caramel, toffee and vanilla on the nose, with molasses underneath. The palate is full-bodied and sweet up front, then turns properly spicy — cinnamon and clove, with a pepper and ginger note that carries into a long finish. It is closer to gingerbread or cherry cola than to anything subtle.
Wine Enthusiast rated it 92 points and described it as too intense to sip on its own but well suited to mixing with ginger ale and lime. That assessment matches my experience with the bottle exactly, and it is the most useful single sentence written about it.
What it is genuinely good at
Anything with ginger. A Dark ‘n Stormy variant made with Kraken is excellent. The rum’s clove and pepper meet ginger beer’s heat and the two amplify rather than compete. This is the bottle’s best use, full stop.
Drinks that have defeated other spiced rums. At 47%, Kraken survives dilution that flattens Captain Morgan. If your spiced rum cocktails have been coming out tasting like sweetened mixer, this fixes that in one pour.
Cola, if you like cola. The rum is already cola-adjacent in flavor, so the combination is coherent rather than interesting. It works.
Coffee and dessert drinks. The mocha and molasses notes are real, and they do something in an espresso-based or cream-based drink.
Where it falls short
It is not a sipping rum, despite the proof and the presentation suggesting otherwise. The sugar and the spice intensity that make it work in a highball make it cloying neat. If you want to sip rum, buy an aged rum with a real age statement — you will spend similar money and get a substantially better experience.
It overwhelms delicate cocktails. Do not put Kraken in a daiquiri or a mojito. It will erase the lime and the mint. Those drinks want a white rum.
The sweetness is significant. Like nearly all spiced rum, it carries added sugar. Account for it — cut the simple syrup in any recipe you adapt.
The bottle oversells the liquid. That is a marketing observation, not a criticism of what is inside. But people buy it expecting a dark, aged, serious rum and receive a well-made, sweet, high-proof spiced rum. Those are different products.

Two drinks worth making
Kraken and ginger. 2 oz Kraken, 4 oz ginger beer, half a lime squeezed in and dropped in the glass. Build over ice. This is what the rum is for.
Spiced rum old fashioned. 2 oz Kraken, a scant quarter ounce of simple syrup — much less than a standard old fashioned, because the rum brings its own — two dashes Angostura, orange peel expressed over the top. Stir 30 seconds. The high proof is what makes this work; it would collapse with a 35% rum.
