Irish whiskey and bourbon are different legal classes. Irish whiskey is aged ≥3 years in Ireland. US bourbon is ≥51% corn in new charred oak. Flagships are often 40%.

Whiskey is mildly acidic (published Scotch analyses often pH 3.5–4.5). TTB does not set a pH. Cola mixers are more acidic than the spirit.
Ginger ale, soda water, cola, and lemon are the honest whiskey mixers. Soda water keeps the 97-kcal shot. The pour is still one standard drink.
Whiskey does not have to be chilled. Room temp shows aroma. Ice chills and dilutes. A freezer pour mutes the nose and will not freeze 80-proof solid.
Whiskey usually smells like oak — vanilla, caramel, toast — plus grain and ethanol. Peat, rye, and fruit depend on the type. Cold mutes the nose.
Water, ice, and an honest mixer change whiskey more than a hack. Soda water is the zero-sugar highball. You cannot un-oxidize a tired bottle.
The common American whiskey barrel is about 53 US gallons (200 L). That is cooperage custom, not a TTB size. A beer barrel is 31 gallons.
