ToggleWhat’s Nulu Bourbon Whiskey?
Nulu Bourbon Whiskeys or Nulu Straight Bourbon Whiskeys are meticulously chosen barrels of MGP bourbon undistilled while PCS distillate rests.
Every barrel is different from another; that’s why each one of the straight bourbon whiskey barrels is individually unique and may vary in alcohol content or proof.
Fun Facts
History & Origin
Nulu Straight Bourbon Whiskey was founded in 2016 by PCS or Prohibition Craft Spirits in Louisville, Kentucky. The founder, and president of PCS Distilling Company, Keith Hazelbaker, wanted to create something new with their current line-up of spirits.
He got this “back-to-basics” idea and started making a hand-tended small batch of 53 gallons each. Nulu Straight Bourbon became the fifth spirit brand in the PCS family of spirits. [1]
How It’s Made
Nulu Straight Bourbon Whiskey is blended with sourced bourbon or MGP bourbon. These kinds of bourbon are distilled in Indiana and are unfiltered at cask strength.
Nulu specifically use a four to five-year-old MGP for their bourbon, which will give a rich and layered bourbon flavor in the barrel.
Aging Process & Age Statement
A bourbon whiskey should have been aged for a minimum of two years in a new, charred oak barrel to be considered a straight-bourbon whiskey. [2]
Each Nulu Straight Bourbon Whiskey cask has its unique age statement, most of which are aged around four to five years. However, 6-year-old single barrel variations of Nulu Bourbon Whiskey are available in the market.
Mash Bill & Alcohol Content
Nulu Straight Bourbon Whiskey has a mash bill content of 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley.
Nulu Straight Bourbon Whiskey bottles can have 112-proof or around 52% ABV to 118-proof or roughly 54% ABV after aging in oak barrels for 4-to-5 years, while a non-chill filtered bourbon is at around 101 proof before bottling.
Ownership & Distillery
Prohibition Craft Spirits Distilling Company owns Nulu Single Barrel Line in Louisville, Kentucky. Their Baxter Avenue Facility makes creations from distillation to bottling to glass.
However, Nulu Straight Bourbon Whiskeys are selected barrels blended with MGP bourbon. MGP has its distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, producing spirits for private labels.
Tasting Notes
Palate: Cinnamon notes, baking spice, burnt caramel, rye spice, and ends with more hints of candied grape fruitiness.
Color/Hue: Dark Bronze or Golden Amber
Nose: Tingle of ethanol, fresh nuts, underlying rye spice but highlights oak woody notes and herbal hints.
Finish: Fine long finish. The dried cherry, light rye spice and oak linger as an aftertaste.
