The drinks that taste least like alcohol are fruit-forward, juice-heavy cocktails such as the Piña Colada, Sex on the Beach, Tequila Sunrise, Mimosa, Cosmopolitan, and simple highballs like Malibu and pineapple or vodka and cranberry. Juice, cream, sugar, and bubbles mask the burn of the spirit. That is also their main risk: a drink that does not taste strong still contains real alcohol, often a full standard drink or more. Below are the recipes, using International Bartenders Association (IBA) specifications where they exist, with a quick note on how much alcohol each contains.
Why some drinks hide the taste of alcohol
Ethanol tastes hot and slightly bitter. Sugar and acid balance that heat, fat from cream or coconut coats the palate, and cold temperatures and carbonation dull it further. Low-proof or neutral spirits help too. Vodka, for example, is defined under 27 CFR § 5.142 as neutral spirits distilled at or above 95% ABV, so it has very little flavor of its own and disappears into juice. Flavored spirits and liqueurs can be bottled as low as 30% ABV under 27 CFR § 5.151, and some coconut rum liqueurs are lower still; Malibu, for example, is 21% ABV.
Fruity cocktails that barely taste like alcohol
Sex on the Beach
- 40 ml vodka
- 20 ml peach schnapps
- 40 ml fresh orange juice
- 40 ml cranberry juice
Build over ice in a highball glass and garnish with half an orange slice, per the IBA. Two juices and a sweet liqueur make this one of the easiest drinks to sip. For bottle choices, see the best vodka for Sex on the Beach.
Piña Colada
- 50 ml white rum
- 30 ml coconut cream
- 50 ml fresh pineapple juice
Blend with ice and pour into a large glass, garnished with pineapple and a cherry. The IBA notes that a few drops of fresh lime juice are traditional. Coconut cream gives this drink a dessert-like texture that hides the rum almost completely; our guide to coconut cream for cocktails explains which products work best. For more pineapple ideas, see cocktails with rum and pineapple and what to mix with pineapple rum.
Tequila Sunrise
- 45 ml tequila
- 90 ml fresh orange juice
- 15 ml grenadine
Pour the tequila and orange juice over ice in a highball glass, then add the grenadine so it sinks without stirring, per the IBA. Orange juice does most of the work here. For bottle advice, see the best tequila for a Tequila Sunrise.
Cosmopolitan
- 40 ml citron-flavored vodka
- 15 ml Cointreau
- 15 ml fresh lime juice
- 30 ml cranberry juice
Shake with ice and strain into a large cocktail glass, garnished with a lemon twist. This one is shorter and stronger than a highball, but the citrus and cranberry keep it tart and fruity. Fresh juice matters; see our guide to lime juice for cocktails.
Light and bubbly options
Mimosa
- 75 ml fresh orange juice
- 75 ml Prosecco or other sparkling wine
Add the orange juice to a flute, slowly top with sparkling wine, and stir gently. The IBA notes that the drink is also known as Buck’s Fizz. Because half the glass is juice and the wine is far weaker than spirits, a Mimosa is one of the lightest cocktails on this list.
Two-ingredient drinks
- Malibu and pineapple: 1 part Malibu to 2 or 3 parts pineapple juice over ice. At 21% ABV, Malibu is about half the strength of standard rum. Our guide to how many shots of Malibu affect you covers its strength in detail.
- Vodka cranberry: 1 part vodka to 3 parts cranberry juice with a lime wedge.
- Vodka lemonade: 1 part vodka to 3 parts lemonade over ice.
- Rum and pineapple or rum and cola: see our list of 2-ingredient rum drinks.
If you would rather skip alcohol entirely, most of these drinks work as mocktails when you replace the spirit with soda water or extra juice.
How much alcohol is in a drink that tastes weak?
A US standard drink contains 14 grams of alcohol, equal to 1.5 ounces (about 44 ml) of 40% ABV spirits, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Taste does not change that math:
- A Piña Colada with 50 ml of 40% rum contains about 1.1 standard drinks.
- A Sex on the Beach with 40 ml of vodka plus peach schnapps contains roughly 1.1 to 1.2 standard drinks, depending on the schnapps strength.
- A Tequila Sunrise with 45 ml of 40% tequila contains about one standard drink.
The NIAAA defines binge drinking as a pattern that brings blood alcohol concentration to 0.08% or higher, which for a typical adult means about 5 or more drinks for men, or 4 or more for women, in about two hours. Sweet drinks make it easy to reach that point without noticing. Treat those numbers as information, not a target: pace yourself, alternate with water, eat, and never drive after drinking. Our guides to how much alcohol is in a margarita, how many ml are in a shot, and jigger measurements help you measure what you pour.
Frequently asked questions
What alcoholic drink tastes the least like alcohol?
Creamy and juice-heavy drinks such as the Piña Colada, Sex on the Beach, and Mimosa usually taste the least like alcohol because fruit, sugar, and cream mask the spirit.
What is a good first drink for someone who does not like the taste of alcohol?
A Mimosa or a low-proof highball such as Malibu and pineapple is a gentle start. Both are fruity and lighter in alcohol than spirit-forward cocktails.
Do sweet drinks get you drunk faster?
Sweetness does not add alcohol, but it can make drinks easier to finish quickly. Count standard drinks rather than relying on taste.
Which liquor has the least alcohol taste?
Vodka has the most neutral flavor because federal rules define it as neutral spirits. Lower-proof liqueurs and flavored spirits also taste milder.
