Typical US unflavored vodka is 40% ABV / 80 proof. Ethanol vapor is what burns, not a party trick. NIOSH lists ethyl alcohol’s flash point at 55°F and classes pure ethanol as a Class IB flammable liquid. Water in 80-proof vodka raises that flash point versus neat ethanol. This page will not invent a brand flash point or a flaming-shot recipe.
US vodka bottled as “vodka” must be at least 40% ABV (27 CFR 5.142). Flavored vodka is a different class and may be as low as 30%. Proof is twice ABV — see what is vodka proof. A 1.5 oz shot of 80-proof vodka is one NIAAA standard drink.
What “flammable” means here
Flash point is the lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapor to ignite in air when you introduce an ignition source. NIOSH’s Pocket Guide number — 55°F, lower explosive limit 3.3%, upper 19% — is for ethyl alcohol, CAS 64-17-5, not a Grey Goose SKU and not a home-bar demo. OSHA’s PEL for ethanol vapor is 1,000 ppm. Diluting ethanol with water lowers the vapor pressure of the alcohol. Process-safety writeups often quote a higher flash point for 40% ethanol–water than for neat ethanol. That mixture number is not on the NIOSH card. We will not print a vodka-specific °F as if NIOSH measured your bottle. Conservative line: 80-proof vodka can produce ignitable vapor when it is warm enough and someone adds a flame. It is a flammable-liquid vapor problem. It is not a parlor trick.

What the old page got messy
The 2022 URL said a vodka of “100 proof and above is considered flammable,” that you should use a long lighter to heat the surface, and that Grey Goose / Absolut / Smirnoff each had a “chance of flammability.” Those are not primary flash-point sources. There is no honest brand ranking of who lights easier. We will not walk through a flaming-shot method. We will not tell you to set a drink on fire for guests.
Putting a match to a cold 80-proof shot is a bad experiment, not a proof test. The historical “gunpowder proof” story is tax folklore, not a kitchen method. High-proof neutral spirits near 95–96% ABV are a different class from supermarket vodka. Do not treat them as a well pour and do not treat them as hand sanitizer.
Storage, not a stunt
A sealed 750 mL of 80-proof vodka on a dark shelf is ordinary household liquor, not a drum of industrial ethanol. Keep it capped, away from a gas flame or a stovetop, and out of a hot car.
