Updated August 2026.
Pennsylvania Dutch Egg Nog is a seasonal cream liqueur at 14.75% ABV (rum, brandy, blended whiskey, dairy cream, eggs) from Jacquin’s / Dairyland Distillers in Philadelphia. Unopened, treat the date on the bottle — trade writeups have long said about seven months for this SKU. Once opened, it is leftover dairy: refrigerate and finish on a FoodSafety.gov commercial-eggnog clock of 3–5 days, not like whiskey.
14.75% is not 40%. Five ounces is about 1.23 US standard drinks. It tastes like dessert. Count it as alcohol. Do not leave a punch bowl out past the USDA 2-hour leftover rule (1 hour if hotter than 90°F).
Updated August 2026. Same leftover logic as Evan Williams Egg Nog (that one is 15% ABV on Virginia ABC). Homemade coconut versions: coquito.
Storage table
| State of the bottle | Where it lives | Practical window | Authority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unopened seasonal egg nog liqueur | Refrigerator if the label says so; otherwise cool and dark | Until the printed date; PA Eats has cited a 7-month shelf life for this brand | Manufacturer date; PA Eats/brand-reported 7 months — not a USDA line |
| Opened | Refrigerator, 40°F, cap on | 3–5 days is the USDA commercial-eggnog analog | FoodSafety.gov commercial eggnog 3–5 days |
| Opened, left on a party table | — | Discard after 2 hours at room temp (1 hour if >90°F) | USDA leftover 2-hour rule |
| Homemade eggnog you spiked | Fridge only | 2–4 days | FoodSafety.gov homemade eggnog |
| Frozen | Freezer | Commercial eggnog charts allow months; cream liqueurs can separate | Texture damage likely |
Dairy plus 14.75% is not whiskey
The old page said unopened bottles last “seven months and more” in the fridge and opened bottles 7–10 days. The unopened seasonal window matches the 7-month figure that shows up in Pennsylvania food-writing about this brand. The opened 7–10 day guess is longer than USDA’s 3–5 days for commercial eggnog. We are using USDA for opened bottles. 14.75% alcohol plus sugar slows some spoilage. It does not make cream immortal. Throw it out for lumps that are not nutmeg, yogurt smell, fizz, pink film, or a bloated bottle.
Jacquin’s describes real dairy cream, eggs, rum, brandy, and blended whiskey with holiday spice. That is a bottled cocktail, not a distilled spirit. TTB does not treat it like 80-proof bourbon. See Crown Royal if you were looking for whiskey storage by mistake. Calories are dessert calories — fat plus sugar plus ethanol — not the 97-kcal USDA 80-proof shot. See bourbon calories for the other end of the bar.
How to store it through the holidays
- Buy it close to when you will drink it. This is a seasonal SKU.
- After opening, fridge, cap tight. Do not park it by the coffee machine all morning.
- Do not pour leftover glass back into the bottle.
- A 750 mL is a fifth. Same dairy rules in a 1.75 L handle. See how much a fifth is.
- At 14.75% ABV, 5 oz ≈ 1.23 drinks. Easy to drink like punch. Count it.
An unopened bottle in a cold pantry in January is not the same object as a half-drunk bottle that sat through Super Bowl parties. Do not crowd-source safety from “I drank it at Easter and I was fine.” Foodborne illness is a bad narrator. Evan Williams Egg Nog at 15% is a sibling problem, not a loophole.
Opened vs Evan Williams, and why 15% is not a vault
Heaven Hill’s Evan Williams Egg Nog is listed around 15% ABV. Pennsylvania Dutch is 14.75%. Those are the same leftover-dairy problem with a slightly different spirit blend (bourbon-forward vs rum/brandy/whiskey). Neither is Crown Royal. Neither belongs in a freezer as a preservation plan — cream separates. If you cook French toast in it, leftover batter is still dairy. If you spike a grocery carton of non-alcoholic eggnog with whiskey, you have homemade eggnog (2–4 days), not this bottle. See coquito for coconut milk’s version of the same clock.
Seasonal SKUs disappear after the holidays. An unopened bottle you forgot until March might still be inside a 7-month window and still taste tired. Look, smell, and be willing to toss it. Nutmeg on top is optional. Driving on two mugs is not. 0.08% in most states; 0.05% in Utah.
