Updated March 2026.
Cask strength / barrel proof is not a TTB class. It means the bottle is filled at (or near) barrel strength instead of being cut to a house proof. The number is on that neck. US whiskey still has to be at least 40% ABV. Brown-Forman’s US sheet prints Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof as 62.5–70% (125–140). A 1.5-ounce pour at 70% is 1.75 NIAAA drinks. Bottled-in-bond is exactly 100 proof — not the same phrase.
Related: highest-proof whiskey, bottled in bond, 100-proof meaning.
Phrase vs number
| Language | What it has to mean |
|---|---|
| Cask strength / barrel proof | Not a TTB type — read that neck |
| US whiskey floor | ≥40% ABV / 80 proof |
| Bottled in bond | Exactly 100 proof (27 CFR 5.88) |
| JD Single Barrel Barrel Proof | 125–140 official band |
A 750 mL 70% bottle is about 29 drinks. Four 140-proof pours are seven drinks. Pour math: whiskey drinks.
