Best Whiskey Under $50

Updated March 2026.

Whiskey under $50 is a wide aisle — bourbon, Tennessee, rye, Irish, Canadian, blended Scotch, and a few Japanese blends. This is not a 2026 price catalog. The sticker in your state is the price. A bottle that was $42 in 2023 can be $55 now. If it is over $50 today, it does not belong on this page today.

US whiskey is at least 40% ABV (27 CFR 5.143). Proof is twice ABV. A 1.5-ounce 80-proof pour is one US standard drink (NIAAA). That math does not care whether the label says bourbon or blended Scotch.

What still shows up under $50

Style Bottles that typically clear $50 Watch-outs
Bourbon / Tennessee Evan Williams Black or Bonded, Wild Turkey 101, Maker’s Mark, Four Roses Yellow/Small Batch, Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7, Old Forester 100 Jack is Tennessee whiskey (charcoal mellowed), not bourbon. Old No. 7 is 80 proof in the US. See Jack Daniel’s proof.
Rye Rittenhouse Bottled-in-Bond, Old Overholt Bonded, Wild Turkey Rye, Bulleit Rye Bonded rye is 100 proof. More spice, more ethanol per jigger.
Irish Jameson, Tullamore D.E.W., Bushmills Original Triple-distilled blends. Redbreast 12 and Green Spot are often over $50 — do not force them onto this list.
Scotch / other Famous Grouse, Monkey Shoulder, Teacher’s, Johnnie Walker Red; Suntory Toki when the tag is under $50 Glenlivet 12 and Glenfiddich 12 have crept over $50 in many US stores. Check. Single malt is not automatically “better.”
Canadian Crown Royal Deluxe, Canadian Club Canadian whisky rules are not bourbon rules. Crown is a blend.

For the bourbon-only cut see best bourbon under $50. For smoky bottles that are often over this budget, smoky bourbon. Proof help: whiskey proof meaning.

Under $50 is not “cheap whiskey”

Bonded rye and 101-proof turkey are not bottom-shelf jokes. They are more alcohol and more flavor per dollar than a lot of $70 NAS bourbon. Age statements under $50 still exist; many good bottles are NAS. Do not pay a flipper $80 for a $32 suggested bottle and call it a deal.

Export proofs differ. Some Jack Daniel’s and Scotch SKUs are not 80 proof outside the US. Read the neck in your hand. We will not invent a 2026 warehouse price for Kirkland whiskey either — Costco’s tag is the price, and the back label is the producer.

Four 1.5-ounce 80-proof pours are four standard drinks. NIAAA’s binge pattern is four drinks in about two hours for women, five for men. That is a health line, not a target. Do not drive.
