Courvoisier vs Hennessy: Which is Better? (2023 Updated)
Last Updated on March 16, 2023 by Lydia Martin
Top-tier, specially made, and expensive are common descriptions for the two leading cognac brands, Hennessy and Courvoisier. But those who have not taken a sip of these brands may wonder which is better in taste, flavor, price, and value.
If you want to know which cognac bottle between Courvoisier vs Hennessy is worth every penny, this article is for you.
Hennessy or Courvoisier?
Hennessy is from Cognac, France, and was established by the Irishman Richard Hennessy in 1765. These were created intentionally with a higher ABV compared to a regular brandy.
The mark of Hennessey is the iconic fist that holds the hatchet etched on every authentic bottle. The unique fruitiness and touch of oak that lingers entice drinkers in this luxurious liquor.
On the other hand, Courvoisier was established in 1835 by Emmanuel Courvoisier and Louis Gallois. They started being traders but later decided to create their own cognac brand and moved to the regions of France to have the best grapes.
They are known to be the “Official Supplier to the Imperial Court” during Napoleon the third’s succession.
How Are They Similar?
Courvoisier vs Hennessy may be competing head-to-head as the top cognac worldwide, but a few things are similar to both. Both are made in Cognac, France, where the best grapes for making wine are grown. The location chosen by both manufacturers has the best climate (1) for these types of grapes.
Both are top-tier brands of cognac. There is a known “Big Four” in the cognac-making industry, and the two are part of it. Both have fruity flavors to their cognac but have a different finish.
Hennessy vs Courvoisier: Head To Head Combat
Price & Value
Though both are top-tier, Hennessy is more expensive. A 700ml Hennessy VS is roughly $60 compared to Courvoisier, around $40. The Hennessy VS is even double-distilled to ensure the fullness of the flavor of this Eaux-de-vie.
Courvoisier also produces special quality spirits, such as Courvoisier L’Esprit de Courvoisier Cognac, which is roughly $6000. On the other hand, Hennessy has its Hennessy Paradis Imperial, which is around $2500 per 750ml bottle.
Regardless of their prices, these are still sought after because of their quality and taste.

Courvoisier offers more fruity, flowery, and sweet-tasting flavors. Their master blender placed much thought in acquiring a specific mixture of flavors. He created something that will entice new cognac drinkers while satisfying the already lovers of this spirit.
Hennessy stood firm on what they were known for the entire time. They became popular with their classic flavor. You can savor the fruitfulness but with a pleasant burnt taste and a hint of oak in every sip.
Apart from these flavors, you will also taste surprising vanilla, spices, and chocolate notes in each bottle.
Felix Courvoisier and Jules Gallois started in Paris. However, they decided to move Courvoisier Cognac to Jarnac to increase their merchant ventures and turn it into liquor production. They have a different approach as they partner with small-time producers as they produce the same flavors and aromas over the years.
Hennessy traces back to 1765 when Sir Richard Hennessy founded it. The brand is not new to merging since it first merged with Moet et Chandon’s champagne house in 1971. It became a bigger name as it partnered with the biggest name in luxury goods, Louis Vuitton, in 1987.
Which came first, Hennessy or Courvoisier?
Hennessy came first since it was established in 1765, while Courvoisier started its operation in the late 19th century.
Which is stronger, Hennessy or Courvoisier?
Both cognacs are 80 proof and have 40% ABV. Therefore, they have the same strength and alcohol content.
Choosing between Courvoisier vs Hennessy may be a little confusing because both are top-of-the-line cognacs. However, choosing between the two cognacs falls to the preference of the drinker and the amount they are willing to spend for their drink.
Courvoisier is for those who want to have a cognac sip that leaves a sweet lingering taste of fruitiness in their tongue. Hennessy is for individuals who want to feel at the top of the world and for a luxurious feel.

Thank for this clear introduction, almost a cognac 101.
Thank you,Great info!
Interesting read, thanks for the info! I love(d?) my brother, but he’s a Hennessey guy and I’m Courvoisier. Maybe we can still be friends? 😉
Thanks, It sounds picky but Cognacs, or any Brandy are generally classified as spirit rather than wine, and Courvoisier and Gallo didn’t come from Parisian ( sic) but Paris.
There is also a range of offers from Courvoisier far more expensive than the Initiale. For example L’Esprit de Courvoisier retails for around $6000.in the US.
