All About Kirkland Tequila

Kirkland Signature Tequila, Kirkland Tequila Price

Costco currently offers three tequilas under the Kirkland Signature – silver, reposado, and añejo.

Costco is a membership club warehouse where you can score different spirits. There are 14 states where you can buy alcoholic beverages without membership.

The three expressions are sourced from Corporate Distillery Santa Lucia in Mexico because tequilas should be made in five approved states in Mexico to be considered one [1].

The distillery uses a modern production process, producing great-tasting and very economical tequila.

History & Origin

Kirkland tequila was first released in 2019, and Costco sourced the expressions from three distilleries in Mexico over the years.

The three expressions are eagerly sought because of their tasting notes and price. So, to keep up with the demand, Costco switched its production to Santa Lucia.

Ownership & Distillery

Kirkland Signature tequilas are owned by Costco, a multi-billion dollar global retailer offering warehouse club operations in eight countries. But who makes Kirkland tequilas?

Based on the NOM of Kirkland tequila bottles, it was currently produced by Corporate Distillery Santa Lucia (NOM 1173).

However, the tequilas were previously produced by La Madrileña (NOM 1142) and Fabrica de Tequilas Finos (NOM 1472) before ending up with their current distiller.

Fun Fact: NOM is an official Mexican standard used in Mexico to regulate tequila production.

Production Process

Corporate Distillery Santa Lucia is a modern distillery, and they use a diffuser and high-pressure autoclaves for cooking the agave piñas.

For the grinding method, the distillery uses roller mills and undergoes fermentation in stainless steel tanks.

After double distillation, Kirkland silver will rest for at least 30 days in steel tanks before bottling. The maturation of reposado and an añejo happens in white oak and ex-bourbon barrels.

Age Statement

Kirkland Añejo with glass

Alcohol Content

Kirkland silver, reposado, and añejo contain 40% Alcohol by volume. Their ABV is equivalent to 80 proof, the standard and average alcohol proof for tequilas.

The expressions do not contain any flavoring – just 40% alcohol and 60% pure water.

Is 100 agave tequila the best?

Many tequila aficionados consider 100% agave tequila to be among the highest quality available. This designation indicates that the tequila is made solely from the fermented sugars of the blue agave plant, without any added sugars or artificial additives.

As a result, 100% agave tequila often possesses a more authentic flavor profile and smoother finish compared to tequilas that contain non-agave additives.

However, preferences for tequila vary among consumers, and some may enjoy the nuances offered by different types of tequila, including those with lower agave content.

Is Jose Cuervo real agave tequila?

Yes, Jose Cuervo is indeed a real agave tequila. Founded in 1795, Jose Cuervo is one of the oldest and most renowned tequila producers in Mexico, recognized for its rich history and commitment to quality. The brand offers a range of tequila products, including both 100% agave tequilas and mixed tequilas.

While some of Jose Cuervo’s offerings may contain a blend of agave and other sugars, many of its premium varieties, such as Jose Cuervo Tradicional and Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia, are crafted from 100% blue agave, ensuring an authentic and flavorful tequila experience.

Is Jose Cuervo Gold 100% agave?

No, Jose Cuervo Gold is not 100% agave. Unlike some of Jose Cuervo’s premium offerings, which are crafted exclusively from 100% blue agave, Jose Cuervo Gold is a mixed tequila, meaning it contains a blend of agave and other sugars.

While Jose Cuervo Gold remains a popular choice for cocktails and mixed drinks due to its smooth taste and versatility, it does not meet the criteria for being classified as 100% agave tequila.

Consumers seeking the authentic flavor and purity associated with 100% agave tequila may prefer to explore other varieties within the Jose Cuervo portfolio or opt for tequilas labeled as “100% agave” for a more traditional experience.
