Updated March 2026.
Walmart sells distilled spirits only where state law, the local license, and Walmart’s own permit all allow it. “Liquor” on this page means spirits — whiskey, vodka, tequila, gin, rum — not beer or wine. A store that sells Modelo is not automatically a store that sells Tito’s.
There is no federal Walmart liquor list. Blogs that reprint a 17-state “complete list” are secondary and they contradict each other. We will not pretend we audited 4,600 stores in 2026.
How the rule actually works
| Filter | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| State spirits channel | Control / monopoly states put packaged spirits in government stores, not grocery aisles | Alabama ABC, Pennsylvania Fine Wine & Good Spirits, Virginia ABC, New Hampshire Liquor, Utah DABS, Idaho, North Carolina ABC |
| Corporate / permit bans | Some states will not give a package-store permit to a publicly traded chain | Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code § 22.16 (public corporation ban). Walmart sells beer and wine in Texas; not packaged liquor. |
| Grocery-spirits states | Law can allow a grocery to hold a spirits permit. Walmart still has to apply and stock | California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Missouri, and others. Store-by-store, not automatic. |
| Beer and wine only | Many states let groceries sell malt beverages and wine but keep spirits in package stores | Florida, New York, Georgia package-store model, Colorado (beer/wine in grocery; spirits elsewhere) |
| Walmart policy | Even where legal, the company may not take the license | Check that Supercenter. Neighborhood Markets differ. |
The 2023 version of this URL listed 17 grocery-spirits states and five “no alcohol at Walmart” states. Those lists were already mixing “can a grocery sell spirits” with “does this Walmart.” Alaska, Delaware, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Utah are often named as hard grocery-spirits (or grocery-alcohol) limits — Utah is a control state. Do not treat a 2023 bullet list as a 2026 census.
How to get a real answer in 60 seconds
- Search Walmart.com for a spirit SKU and set your store. If it is not sold there, the aisle is not hiding it.
- Look at the store’s alcohol department: beer cave only vs a spirits run.
- If you are in a control state, the spirits run is at the ABC store, not at Walmart, unless the state has a specific grocery exception you can cite.
- Hours are local. Walmart does not override last callwhat time Walmart stops selling alcohol.
Age 21. A cooler that is still lit is not permission. Marketplace third-party “liquor” listings are not the Supercenter shelf; Walmart’s own Marketplace policy restricts most alcohol. For Florida beer hours see Florida beer. For gas-station clocks, gas stations.

- NABCA / state ABC: control jurisdictions sell packaged spirits through the state system (AL, ID, NH, NC, PA, UT, VA, and hybrids). Not a Walmart memo.
- Tex. Alco. Bev. Code § 22.16: public corporation package-store ban (Walmart litigation record; still no TX Walmart liquor).
- Store inventory is the primary source. 2023 17-state blog lists are not re-verified store-by-store.
